Kuala Lumpur #1: Film Editing
In September I travelled to Asia for the first time. Prior to this the furthest east I’d been was Budapest and the hottest place I’d visited was Los Angeles. And here I was, a man from temperate Wales, only 3º from the equator. I knew that it was going to be tough but still I wasn’t quite prepared for the heat.
Back in the UK I’m the kind of person who bounds up stairs two at a time glad for the chance to expend energy but here in Kuala Lumpur I found it inadvisable to break out of a slow walk lest I become drenched in sweat.
So perhaps it was lucky that I spent most of my time indoors. My visit was to help an artist friend of mine in the preparation for her first solo exhibition at Art Square in Bangsar, KL. During my stay I helped produce promotional materials for print, online and for the exhibition itself providing my services as graphic designer, videographer, video editor and photographer.
Shown here is one of the graphic design pieces that I designed using a portrait taken by the renown Malaysian photographer Amri Ginang.
The following standalone promotional videos were collected together and shown on the opening night of the exhibition. Nell and I discussed an idea for this first one before I flew out to Malaysia and we filmed it together over the course of a few hours using various coloured paints, inks, water, milk and washing up liquid.
This next video is another one that we filmed together but this time it was off the cuff. It was filmed quite late at night with little available light. Nell-lynn felt like painting and so I tried my best to keep out of her way while at the same time trying to keep up with her and capture everything.
During the photoshoot for the images used in the promotional materials Amri Ginang shot this video and I edited it together a few days later. Similarly the final video was captured by Hafeidz Hadi during the same photoshoot.
